You need to compare and absolutely check out each opportunity to be sure it is a valid volunteer experience, that it is the best choice for you, that you know where your money will be going and how it will be used, and that you understand any risks involved. And – most vital– that you put adequate backpacking travel insurance in place.

• Travelling or working in any of the countries along or either side of the Equator such as India, North Africa, Cambodia, Central America etc etc think about what you should do here in Australia – then do it! I.e. wear a broad hat, sunscreen and sunglasses, wear breathable cottons, take a collapsible umbrella, drink plenty of fluids, wear inspect repellent and cover up at sundown.
• There are 18 major and at least 1,600 minor languages in India – but don’t freak out at the thought of communicating – most of the population understand at least basic English. If you learn a smattering of Hindi it could help. Even if your accent just cracks everybody up it’s a positive.
• If you’re volunteering remember to work around the weather and the local time table such as school holidays – after all, you can’t teach English to students if schools out for summer!
