Adventure Travel Insurance

Fantastic – your going - leaving Australia to take on the world. Ok, there’s a bit of housekeeping first though – get your shots, get good advice, get GRT footwear (were talking sturdy here) and get adventure travel insurance. After that, within the bounds of responsible travel, just go for it.

What are your options? The sweat and exhilaration of cycling through Cambodia and Vietnam, trekking Tibet or Bolivia, discovering the summit of Kilimanjaro, canyoning in Mexico or extreme canoeing anywhere there’s white water. Or is it going anywhere at all that doesn’t look like home?

Volunteer travel is the new buzz, a total ton of fun and can include wildlife conservation or helping rural or city communities. Definitely check in with your doctor first and definitely get the best travel insurance.

And here’s a tip – don’t take washing powder. Way too suspicious when you’re battling through customs.

So what about travel insurance? You know you need it, but how much? That’s going to depend on where you’re going and what you’re doing:

• Bronze – this has up to 18 months worth of unlimited Overseas Hospital and Medical, Emergency Assistance, ‘hospital’ cash and Emergency Expenses, dental and Personal Liability. This is cheap insurance if you’re a student or backpacker with a tight budget but you don’t want to be left in a tight spot.
• Silver – more of the same but ups the stakes with maximum Emergency Expenses and adds benefits such as Cancellation Fees and Lost Deposits – perfect if you’re trapped who knows where on a bus in Thailand and missing all your connections.
• Gold – steps it up even further and includes Lost Luggage and Personal Effects and double the Personal Liability - recommended minimum for family groups.
• With Platinum you get the lot plus lost credit cards, traveller’s cheques and documents, also alternative transport and way more.

And you have travel insurance international support agency AIG (American International Group) behind you.
