Worldwide Health Insurance

No matter where in the world you travel to it is imperative that you make sure that you organise adequate medical and health insurance before you go. Once you leave Australia any health insurance that you have back home will end, and if you have a medical emergency overseas and haven't organised travel insurance then you are going to find yourself in a pretty sticky situation.

When you travel the risk of having an accident or falling sick is increased for a number of reasons. Firstly you will be travelling long distances by bus, train, car or plane, and may be cooped up in a small space with strangers who may be sick. Air conditioning on busses and planes is one of the easiest ways for contagious illnesses to spread, so although you may think you're healthy you are still at risk of getting sick.

Secondly, you will most probably be taking some pretty big risks that you wouldn't even dream of back at home. This may be trying new foods, like cockroaches or spiders, or eating cheap food from street hawkers without knowing whether it was prepared hygienically. The water may also be contaminated in the destination you travel to, and drinking untreated water can give you some pretty nasty illnesses.

Thirdly, depending on where you are travelling to there may be a high risk of disease, whether airborne, waterborne or carried by animals or insects. A good example of this is malaria, which is carried by mosquitos in many parts of the world. The majority of illnesses may simply put you in hospital for a few days, but the more serious cases can require expensive medical treatment, emergency evacuation or worse.

This is why it is important to research your destination before you travel so that you know what health risks that you should be most prepared for. This may determine your travel insurance, the medical kit that you bring, and the vaccinations that you need before you travel.

When preparing for an overseas holiday the best thing that you can do is to visit a travel doctor, as they will be well informed about the destination you are travelling to and the steps you need to take to prepare yourself for travel to particular areas.

The most important step that you can take with travel to any destination is to purchase adequate medical and health insurance. All of iTrek's travel insurance policies cover unlimited medical and hospital costs, evacuation, emergency rescue and family emergency, so you know that no matter which one you go for you'll be protected.

You wouldn't dream of going without any health insurance back home, so don't take the risk of leaving yourself unprotected when you travel.
