Protect Your Health Overseas

Your health is the most important thing that you have. Losing luggage, having money stolen or having to rearrange your travel plans can be frustrating and expensive, but if you had to choose between them and your health there's no question as to which one you would choose. Because of this, your health should be the number one thing that you protect.

When we are at home in Australia we all have access to Medicare, and many of us also have Private Health Insurance. This protection is something that we sometimes take for granted and assume that it will always be there. Because of this, many people don't consider the fact that your usual health insurance will end once you leave Australian shores.

We wouldn't dream of going without any health insurance at home, so why even consider going overseas without any form of medical and health insurance? Not only will we be completely unprotected once we leave Australia, but our risk of accident or illness is significantly increased when we travel overseas.

This is for a number of reasons. We are often travelling long distances by plane, bus, car or train, covering a lot of land in a small space of time. We tend to take more risks with food or water, trying new and different foods and forgetting that in some countries food is not prepared as hygienically as back home, and water may not be as clean.

Especially if you are doing adventure sports, such as skiing, snowboarding, surfing, hiking, cycling, scuba diving, white-water-rafting or anything else, then you are putting a lot of physical pressure on your body and your health, and also face the risk of accident. Without any travel insurance, you will find yourself in a pretty sticky situation if you are one of the unlucky ones who find themselves sick or injured overseas.

An overseas accident or illness will mean more than a few frustrating days on medication or trips to the doctor. At home these expenses may not be too large after insurance, but overseas without any form of medical and health insurance they can be a rude shock.

Not only will you have to fork out money to cover doctor or hospital fees and medication, but you will also be liable for the cost of emergency assistance such as ambulance or helicopter rescue, as well as any hospital transfers. If your travel is disrupted or you have to return home early then you may also be up for some whopping cancellation fees.

As you can see, having your health protected at all times when you go overseas is the most important thing you can do when preparing for your holiday. Know the risks and the potential costs involved, and research which policy will best suit you and you will have no regrets should the unexpected occur.
