Travel Insurance to Asia
>> Asia takes in a wide spectrum of countries, cultures and risks.
Consider these risks when you come to purchase travel insurance.
When we think Asia, we so often just think South East. But Asia actually covers from Japan and China, over to Nepal and India and closer to home with Singapore and The Philippines - and of course others.
No matter where you're travelling throughout this region, you will need to have broad travel insurance for Asia in place. Even if you're travelling to the riskier regions (and DFAT - the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade - have some pretty strong warnings out) or just sticking to the main drags, accidents can happen anywhere.
These two stories are actually on the DFAT web site:
An Australian was hit by a car when riding a motorbike in Bangkok and ended up with a fractured leg. He was admitted to the nearest hospital, but because he had no travel insurance he had no options and no choice on which hospital or standard of treatment, and the hospital he was admitted to was pretty basic. Three weeks later parts of his shin had died and his wife turned desperately to the Embassy for assistance. They arranged his evacuation but the family had to pay. The going rate for evacuation from Thailand is in the region of $70,000-$80,000.
In story number two five Australians were injured in a mini-van accident in Bali. All men had travel insurance which covered initial medical and hospital treatment plus the costs and all arrangements for evacuation back to Australia.
Really, no further comment needed here.

- The Philippines are not everyone's first thought, but despite some challenges (DFAT advise a high degree of caution and extreme vigilance in numerous areas) there are some idyllic locations scattered among the 7,000 islands with great diving and snorkelling, white coral beaches, great accommodation, food and more. Check with http://www.dfat.gov.au before travelling.
- Nepal has some of the most magnificent hiking trails on the planet. Though weather can have a mind of its own, October through November could be your best bet. A lot of pre-reading and preparation is advised - but well worth it.
