Finding the Right Backpack
There are many things to look for in backpacks and it really depends on the type of trip you're taking, as well as your budget. For instance, if you plan on hiking and camping for days then you may want to look for a pack that has good water-resistance and can withstand different weather. You also want to make sure that there is good, adjustable framing in the back that can be altered to fit your individual body shape and size. Adjustable arm, chest and hip straps are also important as they can control the weight distribution of your back and utilise the support of your hips and lower back so that your upper back isn't taking all the pressure. A pack that is designed to be packed from the top is good for weight distribution, but can also be a hassle to unpack, especially if you're looking for the torch that you packed at the very bottom of everything. On the other hand, if you're after more of a wearable suitcase then there are many packs designed to open sideways like a suitcase. These aren't great for long distances of walking but definitely do the trick on your average backpacking holiday.
Last but certainly not least, make sure it is secure. This is important whether you are purchasing a backpack or a suitcase. If you can fit a lock over the zipper than this is good. If the zipper has a lock on it already this is even better. Many of the newer high-range backpacks have locking systems that can tell you if someone has tampered with the lock. Ultimately it's better to be safe than sorry, and better to be comfortable than having a poor quality pack, or struggling upstairs with a suitcase.
